The aim of the Development fund is to provide short-term, pump-priming funds to support innovative, proof-of-concept cancer research. Often the projects we support are in too early of a stage to be competitive for major research support but have the potential to be with just a small amount of investment (<£15,000). Priority is given to projects with a clear translational trajectory, to early career researchers and for new collaborations between investigators.
Applications to the Development Fund are reviewed by the multidisciplinary Research Committee with support from previous awardees. The projects are ranked on criteria such as scientific quality, strategic relevance and translational potential, and feasibility. The Development Fund is considered one of the key successes of the Centre and we look to continue its evolution with the implementation of more targeted award schemes aimed at complementing CRUK’s new funding streams.
Expanding the Development Fund Through Industrial Support:
The Development Fund has been very effective in pump-priming early stage activity, and Oxford’s industry collaborator AstraZeneca having recognised this, are generously supporting the fund with a contribution to allow us to make two extra awards. The Cancer Research UK Oxford Centre Development Fund is now closed for applications from all Oxford Centre members.
